GREAT COFFEE FROM
A GREAT NAME

- COMPANY -

A FAMILY HISTORY

Our customers have always known and appreciated our coffee. But not everyone knows that our company imports the finest raw materials from producing countries all around the world, expertly roasting and blending them in a jealously guarded secret traditional process.

In 1920, Guglielmo Garibaldi began selling coffee and spices in his shop under the arcades of Chiavari, judiciously blending the best-quality coffees and offering his customers a superior-quality product.

The craft workshop grew into a company. His son Adriano took over and continued to expand it into a major business, winning over markets throughout the world.

In 2014, the baton passed to Adriano’s sons, Mirko and Fabrizio. They have embraced their father and grandfather’s heritage, running the firm with the same professionalism, enthusiasm and keen eye for quality and excellence that are the Garibaldi family hallmarks.

- THE HISTORY OF COFFEE -

THE PHILOSOPHICAL BEVERAGE

Of all the legends surrounding the origins of coffee, the most evocative is perhaps that of Ethiopian goatherd Kaldi, who noticed his goats chewing on the berries and leaves of a Coffea plant. The flock became unusually lively and energetic, so he decided to taste the red berries himself. The custom gradually spread, and an infusion with the toasted ground seeds began to be prepared.

The drink became known as Kahwa and then Kahve. However it originated, the habit of preparing an energy drink with Coffea berries spread from Ethiopia to Yemen and from Egypt to Damascus and on to Istanbul.

In Europe, coffee began to be distributed only in the 16th century, becoming popular in the 17th as coffee houses sprang up. The use of machines for making coffee at home then started to gain ground. Coffee drinking spread through all social classes, becoming the everyday rite that still permeates our food habits and culture today. Italy is now the undisputed world leader in the import-export trade and de facto ambassador of the espresso philosophy.

1920 – Il caffè di Garibaldi is a perfect exemplar of Italy’s coffee pedigree, with its expertise in roasting and creating unique, premier blends.

COFFEE VARIETIES

Coffee beans come from the Coffea plant, and numerous varieties exist.
The commonest are Arabica and Robusta, which are cultivated in several parts of the world.

Coffea Arabica, originally from Ethiopia, was the first used to prepare the drink. Cultivation elsewhere began back in the 17th century, and it is now farmed throughout the world’s tropical regions. Coffea Canephora (Robusta) is common in Africa, Asia and Indonesia; it is more robust than the Arabica but less highly prized.

ARABICA

Aromatic and sophisticated.
0.8–1.5% caffeine content.

ROBUSTA

Bitter and full bodied.
1.7–3.5% caffeine content.
